Explain the difference between prospective and retrospective materials evaluation.	Prospective evaluation refers to looking forward to try to see if a set of materials will be useful. Retrospective evaluation means looking back and assessing how well a set of materials worked.
What are the problems with relying on reviews and publishers' descriptions of materials?	Reviews: a) reviewers may not be using the same criteria that you are b) a reviewer is not looking at the materials with any particular course or group in mind Publishers' descriptions: a) for financial reasons coursebooks have to be designed to appeal to as wide a range of markets as possible so they may not be relevant b) publishers vary in what they feel are key characteristics of course materials c) publishers vary in their use of terms like 'intermediate' and 'intensive'
